"trues"

Learn to spell.

The real man portrayed by Will Smith backs the movie.

Whatever details are changed - the main idea is still the same.

Right... except that 'inspired' by a true story means that there are differences between the story and reality... like maybe the real got hired through an affirmative action program, or was actually on welfare while he taught himself the skills neccessary to get the great job... that makes it a very very different story as far as the policies we talk about here are concerned.

Lets say he was on welfare. He did not settle for it. He did what he had to do to better himself.

I do not understand why you want to fight this. This man should be commended and used as an example for what is possible. We should be celebrating this man. Why do you want to resist that?

By all means celebrate him. But don't point to his story to say that all poor people should be able to get high-level jobs at stock exchenges if they were just willing to work at it, and especially don't use his story as anecdotal evidence when you want to cut welfare programs. Since you've explicitly indicated that welfare is unneccessary because poor people should all do what this guy is doing, I hope you can forgive me for being cynical about your motivations.

BTW, this one actually based on a true story:

I can't spell right, can't read right, at times, even, can't understand right, but at least, I can quote right:

"Human beings make their own history but not in circumstances of their own choosing"

I guess what I am trying to say is most movies and mainstream media portray african americans as people who can only succeed as basketball players or rappers. They only show the poor and gritty lifestyle without hope or optimism except for those two previously mentioned means. Now a movie comes along with another angle. And yes it is inspired by a true story, and I know what that means. It is also based off the book by the same name, written by the character Will Smith portrays. I am not saying all African Amerericans can do what Will Smith does, but it is good to see a different version than what we are used to seeing. I would like to see more of it. It is better to have these type of role models as opposed to rappers. Do you not agree?

On this particular question, I agree.

Yeah, and in addition: this nasty thing with rappers are those numerous unwanted and early-age pregnancies and all the sex that goes along with it, as a new study reveals............ TERRIBLE.

As I've said, this is definitely a good story to tell and a good role model to have. But this has primarily been a political blog rather than an inspirational role model blog, and when this type of thing gets brought into poloitics it's ussuall used as anecdotal evidence by jackasses who knopw that all the statistical evidence is massively against them (NRA comes to mind). I definitely don't have a problem with the story, I'm jsut trying to head off it's innapropriate use to derail charitable social programs.
