North Carolina School Does Not Want To Offend Anyone

And by doing so offends everyone. Political correctness/multiculturalism is awesome. Sophist should do something about this.

Diatribe, the article doesn't say they don't want to offend anyone. It does state, "The new rule stems from a controversy over students wearing shirts bearing flags of other countries." Now, I can't imagine what controversy there is from someone wearing a t-shirt with the Bulgarian flag on it (for example), but apparantly this problem was big enough that the school board had to make a rule regarding it.

I agree with you that this is definitely over the top though. But to say that they don't want to offend anyone is assuming too much.

I know the article doesnt say it, but that is what's going on. Some kid may where a shirt with flag of India and another kid who is from Pakistan takes offense. They get into a fight. Some kid is wearing a Iran flag - another kid dad died by an Iranian soldier in Iraq. You get my point. In order to make sure no one is offended or feelings are hurt - everybody gets punished. Just dumb. The fact that any student cannot where a shirt with the AMerican flag on it (especially on 9/11) is just retarded - All in the name of protecting the children. Give me a break.

I'm not saying it's not dumb. It is. Incredibly. However, without knowing the background behind it, or being one of the players involved in it, it's dangerous to assume you KNOW what is going on.

Just so we're clear here, you probably are right. A more logical choice would be to ban anything that's not pro-American.

It is dangerous to assume I know what is going on. That is funny.

Are you serious? I'm at least 95% sure this rule was passed to stop students from wearing mexican flags. This is way way not about multiculturalism, much the opposite. Multiculturalism would let people wear flags from foreign countries.

And the reason a school would not allow students to wear a mexican flag would be????
So lets say your argument is true that they did not want hispanic studetns to wear a mexican flag shirt - (one reason would have to be that they should not get to promote a country they dont live in). If that is true then they should allow a US shirt. But as they dont that means this theory does not hold or they do not want to offend other cultures. Not offending other culturs = must respect other all cultures = Multiculturalism.

If only real life were as black and white (pun intended) as it is in your head.

Diatribe's argument is right on. If the problem is Mexican flags then ban those flags. Banning all flags implies an unwillingness to discriminate between differing flags. This kind of unwillingness is precisely what multiculturalism is all about. It’s argued that no culture can be better than any other, therefore, we can show no differential treatment between them. The representation of one flag is no better than the representation of any other flag and therefore we can’t discriminate between flags. Thus all flags are banned.

This kind drain bamaging thinking leads to all kinds of weird perversion such as prohibiting children from wearing this NATION'S flag to pay respect to a past tragedy. Patently absurd.

But you're not distinguishing between multiculturalism as an actual goal and mutliculturalism as a stupid cop out. Remember, being politically correct is more often about washing your hands of a tricky situation than it is about actual social justice.

What I mean to say is, I'm sure the administrator who banned all flags because banning just the Mexican flag could get him in trouble; so he banned all flags, which, while stupid, also absolved him of any accusations of bigotry etc.

I'm not sure you can hold that type of stupid cop-out attempt against the idea of multiculturalism.
