I Hope This Lady Gets A Lot of Credit

And maybe start a debate about the need for armed citizens. Vietnam Vet gives his side of story which is very interesting.

This would be a great argument against gun control IF the man attacking the church had been doing so with an axe.

You cannot stop crazy people from getting a gone with more gun control legislation. They find a way (just like criminals). So once they have a gun the issue is how to do you stop them. Seems like the only two ways we have seen at any of the incidents is
1. Gunner kills him or herself
2. Armed citizen takes him or her out.
Problem with gunner killing him or herself is that the damage is allready done.

Nah its a great argument against gun control. Given that she was law abiding citizen and had gun control laws banned her from possessing a fire arm she would not of had the opportunity to stop this mass killing before it got really ugly. The murderer on the other had would of not been hindered by the law since he had already decided to break the law by KILLLING AS MANY PEOPLE AS POSSIBLE.

What I found most interesting is why a church needs to have armed security guards in the first place?

Sure you can point to instances like this as a reason why, but really?

Incidentally, I'm not sure which side I'm on here. As a general rule, I'm for gun control, but in instances like this, the woman probably did save many lives.

However, if everyone arms themselves and we have a situation like this and you have one (or more) shooters, then you have innocent people whipping out guns, then you have SWAT teams coming, at what point does it become counter-productive?

I would think it would get so confusing that you could have murderers get away with it because they could almost blend in with the rest of the crowd.

...tough situation.

Since Sophist just got finished making this exact same argument (then not responding to my reply), I'll just copy-paste my answer:

"I’ve stated many times that I don’t buy the ‘enforcement is impossible, so why bother making a law?’ argument. I believe that we looked into this before and found that the rates of both gun fatalities in general and mass shootings specifically were drastically decreased in countries where guns were illegal and those bans were enforced, such as England.
Certainly there is a black market for guns in those countries, but a few things are true:
1. Finding and obtaining a gun (or many guns, as are usual in theese mass shooting cases) on the black market is much harder and requires more social skills and a cooler head than grabbing a gun from your dad’s basement or buying a bunch at a gun show. People who sell things on black markets have to be cautious, and they don’t want to do business with people who are clearly unstable and dangerous. I definitely believe that even with a black mrket in place, forcing these crazy, deranged people to go through that black market if they want a gun will stop most of them before they hurt anyone.
2. If any of these people had prior run0ins with the law before they did their shootings, for instance if they were threatening co-workers/ other students or whatever, then the police might look into them, find a gun in their home, and arrest them right there. As things currently stand, if teh police find that a clearly dangerous, psycopathic person who’s been making threats against people has also beeen stockpiling a bunch of guns, they can’t do anything about it.
3. Police, security guards, and various members of the armed forces are all trained to spot concealed weapons. If one of them noticed someone walking around with a concelaeed weapon, they could immediately stop and arrest them right there, before any crime is committed. As things stand now, the police can’t do anything to stop a crime from being committed until a gun has actually been drawn and pointed at somebody, and by then it’s generally too late.

So, I really do belive that these incidents would be drastically reduced if guns were illegal, and I think that statistical evidence from countries where this is true will back me up."
