Why Teacher Tenure Sucks

If you want to start getting serious about giving our students a top notch education then one place you need to start is letting go horrible teachers. This means tenure has to be done away with.

The point of tenure is to protect researchers and scholars with outrageous ideas from being fired. High school teachers are neither researchers nor scholars. Obviously they should not be able to get tenure. This is just as obvious as the 2nd amendment grants each gun right to the individual.

Yeah, I agree, the teacher tenure thing is a bad prgoram that gets support because teaher's unions are so powerful in elections. It was designed to adress a valid concern, though- most teachers (this is my understanding at least, it may be outdated now) get steady raises throughout their career, so a senior teacher is making much more than someone in their first year. So there's a concern that under tight budget restrictions, the administration might replace more senior teachers with younger ones in order to save money. I don't know how much this would/did actually happen, but unless it became a real national problem it seems like it could be handled through protest and parent/student-group action at the local level.
