The Pledge of Allegiance

Is it such a big deal that the Student Council does not want to recognize it?
This PC stuff seems to be getting out of hand.

This is where Darwin steps in and says this is local goverment - you should be supporting it.
Which I of course respond - I like local goverment = does not mean I need to support all their decisions.

Heh, this isn't even local government, this is 5 college kids in a student group deciding not to do the pledge at the beginning of their meetings. This is so far below anything that affects anyone, it's like my little sister and her middle school friends 'protesting' big evil corporations by handing out flyers in the mall, then going to hang out at Starbucks and feel self-important.
If anything, I'd be expecting you to make fun of CNN.com for thinking this is worth taking the time to report on.

My arguments is that I cannot believe this stuff is being discussed. Is it such a big deal with these students that they need to get rid of it. They cant just find it annoying and move on.

One of the student council members says the Pledge promotes Nationalism. Why is nationalism so bad? Yes I understand what nationalism is - doesnt seem that bad.

I'm not sure what you mean... the students didn't 'get rid of it', they just decided not to do it anymore... I don't see any reason why they should waste time at their own private meetings doing somthing they don't want to do...

Just saw an interview with one of the students on this board who voted to keep the pledge. She said those who wanted to the pledge out consider themselves Socialists, and the leader calls himself a Communist and walks around campus with a beret a military style fatigues. Too funny.

By the way Darwin it is not like they are trying to save time by not doing somehting they dont want to do. They are trying to make a bigger political statement.

I'm sure their decision is politically motivated and they think they're making a statement, but it's not like they're protesting the pledge in front of grade schools where the children do it. What they're doing is much closer to a fahion statement than a political statement, and I really don't see why anyone should give a damn.

In the small picture i do not give damn. Its a small student council at a small school. In the larger picture I care becuase it is a trend that I am sick of. People trying to get rid of words, phrases, activities, and clubs that COULD be offensive to one person - hence everyone is affected. Oh that disrespected my culture - take that away. Hey that hurts my feelings - that needs to go. This theme is annoying and it is continaully brought up from this whole Multicularism, Socialism idea which is just annoying as hell.

But here again I say I don't understand your point, because they're not trying to stop anyone else from doing something because it offends them, they're just deciding that they themselves don't feel like doing it any more.
In the current situation, the only person who is getting offended by another person's behavior is you; you're annoyed that they decided to stop doing the pledge, and you're criticizing that decision- they're not trying to put their opinions on anyone besides themselves, only you are.

They (majority of the student council) dont want to do the pledge anymore becuase they see it as offensive Using the word God they say is offesnive. They also talk about how the pledge promotes nationalism. which they deem offensive. They believe the pledge divides people hence it is offesnive. These socialist members of the council are all about everyone being equal and everyone not having feelings hurt and everyone is the same same same. In doing this they have annoyed me.
And by the way - of course they are putting their opinion on others. That is why they did this. They want to promote the socialist/communist movement.

I say again, if they were standing around with megaphones protesting and preaching their socialist agenda, you'd be perfectly right. Instead they quietly decided what to do at their own council meetings, and didn't try to influence anyone else until the media came up and specifically asked them for their opinion.

Quietly living their lives by their own ideals without trying to influence others unless they're asked is EXACTLY how you want people with opinions you don't agree with to behave.

You do not think they are trying to influence anyone else. Why else would they join the student council of a college. Of course they are trying to influence others. That small group has an affect on everyone at that college. And as the president of the student council is walking around campus like Che every day he is obviously putting out an image that he wants everyone at that college to listen to.

Now if this was some after school club that did not have an affect on the school - then I would care less. But this is the student goverment of the college. There is a difference.

By the way - you don't think he knew the media was going to get a hold of this. I am sure he was shocked when the press heard about this and broadcasted it nationally. Absolutely shocked I am sure
