Everywhere I Read Someone Tells Me How Bad the Economy Is

But then I read something like this. It is weird because you ask someone their opinon on the economy and they typically say its in bad shape. Ask how they are doing personally and they say good.

One thing you're not taking into consideration is the fact that if you ask someone personally how they're doing, 99 out of 100 are not going to tell you that they're living paycheck to paycheck, can hardly afford their mortgage, and have $25000 in credit card debt.

You would probably get a different answer if you surveyed people anonymously.

I'm an economist, and the answer is simple. The economy is doing well - we can't simply stop buying food and cell phones and cars, because the way that we structured our society dictates that we must have these things (try walking to the grocery if you live outside a big city, for example). But we are still living paycheck to paycheck.

Also, most of the gains in the economy are made by the top 25% of the top 1% of the socio-economic scale. Sad, isn't it? The rest of the socio-economic scale is actually not making much more than they did last year. In fact, we are earning less than we did in 2000 when you take into account inflation (regardless of the inflation scale that you use in a calculation).

Sure, the economy is great - but for other people, but not us. People said the same thing during the Great Depression.
