Getting His Due Respect

Over a month ago I said Gen Petraeus needs to get some respect for what he has done in Iraq. This is the first piece I have seen giving him the proper recognition.

While Petreaus has done great things militarily, the unfortunate aspect of this whole thing is that without political progress, the military progress means virtually nothing.

I've been outspoken against the war from the beginning (we can go into why we're at war with Iraq in a later discussion. But, I think that if Bush were intelligent enough to admit that he fucked up and admit why we invaded instead of giving us the tired line of this is where the terrorists are, it would be a lot easier for liberals to support this war.), but I sincerely hope that the political progress can now be on par with the military progress.

Here is the important part of that editorial, "military successes will not automatically produce the national reconciliation necessary for long-term peace and stability. No one knows this better than Petraeus, who has forthrightly admitted that political progress in Iraq has been disappointing."

Without the political progress, however, the best we can hope for is a quagmire like Vietnam with less casualties.

Of course the political progess has not been there yet. But the general has done his part. He has turned a war (which many democrats said was LOST) and calmed the country to levels not seen in four years. That was his job and he did it. It is not his job to make political leaders vote on legislation.
Hence dems and repubs alike should give him praise for doing the job he set out to do.

Praise him, yes. Celebrate because casualties are down? Sure, a little. Problem is, it isn't over. Now is not the time for backslaps and handshakes (remember the last time we were told the war was over and we were treated to Bush's accentuated junk?). Political progress MUST be made for Iraq to be deemed a success. Our military is by far the greatest in the world, but they were not trained to babysit countries.

At some point substantial political progress needs to be made or else we need to leave. This war shouldn't be an open ticket.

That being said, Petraeus has done a great job. Kudos.

And by the way, this

is not progress.

That sucks. Hopefully as Free Markets and Democracy take root in that country such chauvinistic conventions will go the way of the past. Similar to the way it happened in this country.

Dear Iraqi Women,

Congratulations on living in a budding Democratic state! These really are exciting times for you. By following the mold that the United States has created, you can enjoy such freedoms as those attained by women in our country in no time. Just be patient it will happen... not for you granted, but probably, maybe, hopefully, for your grandchildren, but it will happen eventually!

Sincerely,
The United States

"Similar to the way it happened in this country."

The difference is in this country, women steadily gained freedoms and equality. In Democratic Iraq, the women had the freedom (to be police officers) and it was just recently taken away. That's not progress.

On the other hand, maybe one step forward, one step back is considered good in Iraq?
