Being Able To Carry Guns On Campus

Good idea? Bad idea? I currently lean towards good idea. But another part of me says that these incidents are so rare that there really is no need to have extra guns on campus. Truly a tough one.

I definitely say bad idea based on how low the rates are (multiplied by the odds that having the guns on campus would stop any given incident). Take into consideration the figures regarding mixing guns with alcohol/narcotic use (very bad) with the rates of binge drinking and getting high on most campuses (very high). I definitely would expect more deaths overall if more students had guns.

Also there's something to be said about campuses feeling like safe places where people can learn and grow, and not feeling very safe when you realize that the drunk, screaming frat boys down the hall all have handguns hidden next to their bongs. Given the amount of damage that drunken idiots used to do to the dorms using just their fists at the college I grew up next to (ie furniture destroyed and holes punched in the walls/ceiling every weekend), I definitely would not feel safe if those people had guns anywhere near me. Whether or not I was ACTUALLY in danger, I don't think I would be able to study/socialize/etc normally.

I think it is very unfair to characterize those who have these guns as students who would be binge drinking and smoking from a bong. Those who get concealed weapon permits had to do a lot of training and inspections before they are allowed to get this permit. For some reason that does not strike me as the person who later on that night is going to be doing drugs.
Also, due to the fact these students who are leading this "movement" are not going to then do something retarded and forfeit everything they worked so hard to get.
Also, maybe the school could actually put limits on what students can carry - For instance they have to a certain GPA and or belong to numerous groups on campus. So not only is there hoops to jump through for the government but also the school. This could help weed out those you are concerned about with drugs and alcohol.
